1.  Decide what is the problem.

Look at the room, cupboard... what's the problem?  Not enough storage, too much stuff, can't find anything...

2.  Remove everything from the shelf, cupboard...

Pull everything out onto the floor.  Now's a good time to clean what you've just emptied.

3.  Sort things into 3 piles: things to keep, to recycle, to throw out.

As you pick up an item, ask yourself, does this belong here?   Do the old spare stereo speakers belong in the wardrobe?  Probably not.  If not, put it outside.  Leave it outside until you've found the appropriate place for it (even if this is months away - do not shove it somewhere else).

4.  Put back what you want.

Once you've returned what you want to keep, can it be accessed easily without creating a mess.  Do you need containers or baskets to help keep loose items neat. If so, measure what you need, make a list and have it with you when you next go shopping.

5.  Bag up what you don't want and put outside or in the car to give to charity etc.

Organising is time consuming in the start, but WILL save you time in the end.

Start off small.   Pick 1 room or 1 cupboard and go for it.

Some of the helpful storage solutions you find for one room, will help you in another room.

A few of our favourite stores are Ikea and Howards Storage (ask at Howards Storage and they'll usually give you a free small tape measure) keep this in your handbag while you're reorganising your life.
